It's where alpinism began, where the first Winter Olympics were held, and where massive terrain meets an incredible town with world-class food, coffee, and culture.

Why I keep coming back

I’ve returned to this town multiple times. I come knowing I’ll find big lines, meet up with people who have a similar mindset, eat all the fondue I can, and get to stare out the chalet’s windows at the most massive peaks.

  • You dislike weather affecting plans.

  • You prefer to ski groomers.

  • You don't love steep terrain.

  • You want a small, quaint town.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Old buildings, narrow streets, a vibrant downtown, paragliders above you, and many restaurant options. It's a town that you can definitely feel the mountain culture around you.

GETTING THERE

Fly into Geneva, Switzerland (GVA) and rent a vehicle - you’ll want one to get around town, as the resorts are spread out.

Plan on about 1 hour to get there.

The Skiing

  • Grands Montets

    Chamonix’s most famous and challenging area, offering extreme high-altitude terrain, steep bowls, and world-class freeride options up to 3,300 meters

  • Brévent-Flégère

    An interconnected, sunny, south-facing ski area overlooking Mont Blanc, featuring a balanced mix of red and blue runs suited for intermediates.

  • Les Houches

    A family-friendly area at the lower end of the valley with tree-lined runs that are great during bad weather, plus the famous Kandahar World Cup downhill run.

  • Le Tour / Balme

    Located at the top of the valley near the Swiss border, providing wide-open, gentle, and beginner-friendly slopes.

  • Vallée Blanche

    A legendary 20 km off-piste glacial descent starting from the Aiguille du Midi peak (3,842m), meant strictly for expert skiers with a certified mountain guide.

With such a big town and multiple ski areas, it can be challenging to know where to start. Here’s how to kick off your trip with the best experience.

Breakfast

Grab a latte and pastry from Couloir Chamonix

Brévent Ski Area

Right in town, ride this gondy up and get insane views of Mont Blanc to begin your day

First Runs

Warm up on Brévent then head to the Flégère and explore that area

Lunch

Enjoy the view at Les Deux Aigles

Apres

Take the Flegere lift down and stop in Le Petit Social for a beer surrounded by local skiers

Dinner

La Fer a Cheval - get the Fondue of course

  • La Calèche (Classic alpine dinner)
    If it's your first trip to Chamonix and you want the full Savoyard experience, I'd start here. Cozy, lively, and exactly what you picture an Alpine evening feeling like.

    Le Cap Horn (Celebration dinner)
    One of those rare places that blends sushi, seafood, steak, and mountain atmosphere without feeling gimmicky. Great for a nicer night out.

    Munchie (Something different)
    Creative Asian fusion that feels modern without trying too hard. Perfect when you've had enough fondue for a few days.

    Le Monchu (Traditional)
    A Chamonix institution. If you want raclette or fondue in an old mountain setting, this is a solid choice.

    Atmosphère (Date night)
    Right on the river with one of the prettiest settings in town. Refined without feeling overly formal.

  • Moody Coffee Roasters
    Still my #1. They roast their own beans, the space is understated, and it feels like the kind of coffee shop every mountain town wishes it had.

    Couloir Café
    Moody's newer collaboration and probably the coolest café in Chamonix right now. Great design, excellent coffee, and genuinely good food—not just pastries.

    Shoukâ
    Bean-to-bar chocolate, specialty coffee, and one of the prettiest interiors in town. This is where I'd linger on a slower morning.

    Pin Pin
    This is where I'd grab organic pastries instead of breakfast at the hotel. It feels local rather than touristy, and it's known for high-quality artisan baking.

    Red Bread Chamonix
    Cozy atmosphere and outdoor seating with a great view. Get the cinnamon roll.

  • Big Mountain Basecamp
    If you're a fan of in-house brewed craft beer on tap this is the place.

    Le Rooftop par Epicurieux
    Excellent cocktails, a super friendly atmosphere, and the bartenders give great advice.

    Le Janssen Cocktail Club
    If you’ve never been to a Folie Deuce, just know you need to go.

  • Sanglard Sports
    A Chamonix institution that's been outfitting mountain athletes for decades.

    Patagonia Chamonix
    Worth stopping in, even just to see what events or community boards are happening.

    Ravanel & Co.
    A classic mountaineering shop that feels rooted in Chamonix's climbing history.

  • Hôtel Mont-Blanc (My first choice)
    Beautiful rooms, an excellent location, and one of the few hotels that feels timeless rather than trendy.

    Hameau Albert 1er (If you're celebrating)
    Family-owned, exceptional restaurant, and quietly luxurious.

    Héliopic Hotel & Spa (Best value luxury)
    Easy access to the Aiguille du Midi lift, a great spa, and consistently recommended by returning visitors.

    Les Grands Montets Hotel & Spa (For skiers)
    Especially if you're planning to spend time around Argentière.

    Lykke Hotel & Spa (Modern choice)
    A newer option with contemporary design for travelers who prefer a fresher aesthetic.
